Ciao, amici! Today, I want to take you on a journey through my experience as a vendor at the Preston Street Market during Ottawa's Italian Festival. This vibrant event held in Little Italy was an absolute blast, and I can't wait to share all the fun, laughter, and sales that made it an unforgettable experience.
Working with the Market Organizers:
First things first, let me tell you that the market organizers were an absolute hoot! This was not my first market with Freewheeling Craft, and so I have some experience with Amanda but I can say with absolute certainty that she made me feel part of the family and I am so appreciative of that! Her enthusiasm and support was infectious, and it instantly got me excited for the two days that lay ahead. Amanda provided all the assistance I needed, making sure I was well-prepared to dazzle the market-goers with my collection of trinkets.
Smaller Inventory, Big Success:
Based on previous experiences with the weather and due to some of the limitations on space, I decided to bring a smaller inventory. Normally I'm packing the car TO THE BRIM with inventory to maximize on the potential profits and give the most exposure to what kind of items I tend to stock.
This time, I carefully handpicked my favourite pieces that could pretty much all fit in my storage bins, including some wooden bowls and the selection of coffee pots, percolators and moka pots. Boy, did it pay off! It seemed like the Italian Festival brought out the perfect crowd - one that was both eager and curious about our offerings. The Italian charm must have rubbed off on my merchandise because everything I displayed practically flew off the shelves!
Curiosity Piqued by Italian Market
As the festivities unfolded, I couldn't help but notice the sheer excitement in the air. The Italian Festival attracted a diverse mix of locals and tourists, all hungry to immerse themselves in the rich cultural tapestry of Little Italy. Every passerby seemed to have their curiosity piqued by our trinkets, making it an absolute joy to engage in conversations and share the stories behind each unique piece.
There were a lot of folks I talked at length about how to make coffee from a moka pot, which is a speciality that I tend to collect. There were dozens of lookers at the crying onion and anthropomorphic salt and pepper shakers and people who browsed the National Geos from the 70s. I just love vintage enthusiasts who share the same appreciation I do.
Amazing Booth Neighbours
Speaking of joy, let me take a moment to rave about our incredible neighbours on both sides of our booths each day. It's no secret that the people you share your vending space with can make or break the experience, but we struck gold and that can only be a complement to our host for choosing vendors thoughtfully.
Our neighbours were the epitome of warmth, generosity, and camaraderie. We exchanged laughs, helped each other set up, and even managed to squeeze in quick breaks for espressos and Italian sandwich or pizza runs. The sense of community that blossomed amidst the bustling market was truly magical.
Not everything is magic, though
Now, let's talk about the reality of being a vendor at in-person markets. While there's no denying the joy and connection they bring, it's important to acknowledge the downturn in sales that can occasionally occur. Times have changed (yet again), and the rise of online shopping and digital platforms has inevitably affected foot traffic at physical markets. Combined with the downturn in our own economy, people are browsing more than buying right now.
Yet, despite this challenge, I would still jump at the chance to participate again. The smiles, laughter, and personal interactions are irreplaceable, reminding me why I fell in love with this industry in the first place. It's a great way to get the community involved and if I can help someone bring up a memory of their parent's house or laugh at the funny trinkets I have I will take that as a win.
So, to sum the market was ....
A total success. As I reflect at my time at the Preston Street Market during Ottawa's Italian Festival, I can't help but feel immense gratitude for the opportunity to share my trinkets and connect with such an enthusiastic crowd.
The playful atmosphere, combined with the warm embrace of Little Italy's vibrant community, made this experience one for the books. Whether the sales were booming or just trickling in, the connections I forged and the memories I created will forever hold a special place in my heart. So, to all the market lovers out there, don't let the downturns discourage you – the joy of in-person vending is an adventure worth embarking on. Arrivederci until the next whimsical market escapade!
